Jean Tirole, recipient of a grant from the European Research Council
Jean Tirole recently received his third grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for his research project "Harmony within Society". This grant provides him with funding of 1.6 million euros for a duration of 60 months. His two previous grants focused on Cognition and Decision Making: Laws, Norms, and Contracts, and Markets and their Boundaries.
The ERC, established by the EU in 2007, finances top researchers of all nationalities to promote scientific excellence in Europe. With a budget of over 16 billion euros for the period 2021-2027, the ERC takes an open approach, allowing researchers to propose innovative projects in all fields. This long-term funding aims to support groundbreaking research and generate global scientific advances.
Jean Tirole's project aimed to understand what unites members of society, particularly in a context where social equilibrium is fragile, by studying the notion of community. The questions he explored included how a community forms, around what memories, narratives, and common activities.
Jean Tirole is the honorary chairman of TSE and IAST. In 2014, he was awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel for his analysis of market power and regulation. He is also a visiting professor in the Department of Economics at MIT, where he earned his PhD in 1981. Since 2011, he has been a member of the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences. Since December 2023, he has been a member of the new Presidential Council for Science initiated by Emmanuel Macron.
